Hybrid – Painting Journey (2025)

Hybrid is an older miniatures game from Rackham, and one i collected back in 2005 but sold off a few years back. I have made a return to this game as it contained some of my favourite miniatures and is a dungeon skirmish game i now feel is one the best of its kind. So i am beginning the journey of rebuilding my set from second hand markets, selling my painted Blackstone Fortress to fund the whole project, and will diarise my progress here.

I managed to find a seller of the core game box and nemesis expansion without any miniatures, but crucially containing all the extra cards from Cry Havoc magazines 1 to 6 and the gaming aids. Given these would be particularly difficult to obtain and are an important addition for me, i decided to go with this instead of a complete core box set. So the task is to find and build up a miniatures collection to a better standard than i used to have, and i am going for a darkish look to the set in keeping with the theme.

Lodge of the Hod –  I found an inexpensive set of the four lodge of the hod with most of the painting already done that was really nice, and i only needed some minor repair, touch up painting work and bases.

Venerable Ambrosius & Garrell the Redeemer – it was particulary tricky to get the Venerable Ambrosius at a relatively low cost, but i did eventually find a very well painted one needing little work. My first extra Griffin character added was Garell the Redeemer, one of my favouite miniatures who has a hybrid card in his blister pack. The blister pack of Garell i painted is better than i achieved 20 years ago on my original set, and i went with the royal blue cloak instead of grey to fit in style with the hod.

The Hybrids –  I really like these models from the Heresiachs Spawn in the  core box, with their mix of flesh and armour. I painted these very similar to the box images with a bronze metal which looks good with the theme and tiles. I am using a touch of toxic green too.

The Aberration & Pests of Flesh –  the huge monster which i bought second hand already based and undercoated, with his pose is slightly customised from the box. I decided i preferred it with his arm reaching forward so left it. I went with pretty standard colours, using toxic green as a contrast to his purple flesh and a discoloured metal. The pests have an alien look which i utilised with the green and contrasts with the bone textures.

Misericord & Exorcist – both characters have hybrid cards in their blister pack which i managed to obtain as complete packs. I painted Misericord in her relatively traditional cream and brown attire and blue hair tint, and the Exorcist i went for bronze armour and sword and red robes, and left off the female effigy for now, as i prefer his look without it.

Phidias de Basarac & Knight of the Hod – two more amazing models with Phidias card available within his blister pack. I like painting with one shaded colour palette and Phidias with his leather was ideal for this. The Knight has one of my favouite poses and i went with the leather and bronzed armour look with royal blue on the cloak to tie into the other hod characters.

Fusilier & Executioner – some cards are included within the game but without miniatures in the box. The good news is that you can just add one model of each to your small squad unless you want to run another core group instead of the hod, but i prefer generally to keep them as individual characters. The fusilier has a card in the nemesis expansion and the executioner is one of the lovely artwork style cards from the core set.

Neuromancer & Dawn Warrior – the Neuromancer is one of best additions to the Dirz team but was very hard to find in english so i settled for a german blister with hybrid card, painting him a dark green shade. A dawn warrior has a card from cry havoc magazine and was added as a single miniature so far, painted in lighter cloak colours.

Praetorian Guards – these guards have a card from cry havoc magazine, and i went with a standard artwork dark green cloak, using a more bronze style for the weapons and armour.

Templars – i really like these miniatures which have a card from the core box, and i painted in red which is more inquision style but makes them seem more menacing. I plan to use these in an alternative group to the Lodge alongside the Exorcist, an Inquisitor and a Darkness Hunter.

Kyrus The Somber – this limited edition Griffin character was so hard to get all this time later in a blister pack, and is ultimately my most expensive addition with an italian card. However i am so pleased to have a copy as he is another of my favourite miniatures and one i could not be without.

The Nemesis – from the expansion box, i bought this based and undercoated and wanted him to look slightly different to the Aberration, going with a blue tint to his flesh.

Darkness Hunter for the Griffins, painted with a red cloak and hat to team up with the Exorcist and Templars. and the Vicar of Dirz which is such a great model, painted in a green and bronze.

I am now trying to source the Minelayer and Skorize Warriors …
