10 Singles I will Love Forever …

Here are ten singles that as i approach 60 years old still give me the shivers more than others, and will always be my favourites. They generally pay homage to my teenage era of the late 70’s, and what a time for music that was. My aim in compiling and potentially tweaking it brings many good memories, and is of course entirely personal.

Kate Bush – Wuthering Heights (1978)

Despite the brilliance of many of her other songs, it is this one that i still find so emotional. The way the guitar comes in to end the track is so good.

Tubeway Army – Are Friends Electric (1979)

When this song broke i was mesmerised by the dark electronic synths, and its sci-fi theme was just perfect to my ears and ushered in a whole new world for me.

The Clash – London Calling (1979)

Edgy and brilliant, i love the build up intro and the general vibe and rhythm of this song.

Roxy Music – Dance Away (1979)

The rhythm, coolness of vocals and lyrics of this song are amazing. It is a melancholy masterpiece.

Sparks – Number One Song In Heaven (1979)

Impeccable synth and drum rhythms, with two version on the single combined into one long track on the album – so cool.

Electric Light Orchestra – Mr Blue Sky (1978)

A song that still feels epic on every listen, with an uplifting lyric and rhythm. The way this song switches into its orchestral finish is just beautiful.

New Order – True Faith (1987)

I adore the driving rhythm of this track and the way the vocal is sung, it feels both solumn and uplifting at the same time. Such a great video too.

Radiohead – Street Spirit (1996)

Amazing song where the guitar melodies drive the track, and when the layers come in it goes to another level.

Patti Smith Group – Because The Night (1978)

Just a lovely blend of rock and piano and sung perfectly.

The Smiths – How Soon Is Now (1984)

An atmospheric masterpiece, this song just speaks out what many have felt inside at certain times in life.
